Mosaic Week 2017

What is Mosaic Week?

Mosaic Week is a time in which our Affinity Groups and UNC Asheville's Hyannis House are celebrated and put in the spotlight! During Mosaic Week, we highlight the various identities reflected by our affinity groups, as well as the varying cultures present on our campus through a variety of events!

Monday, October 23 - Safe Haven Movie Screening and Discussion Panel

7:00 - 10:30PM
Karpen Hall, Room 038

Hosted by Hyannis House and Gamma Phi Beta Sorority

Tuesday, October 24 - SJCH: Disability in Horror and Halloween

Highsmith Union, Room 104

When it comes to marginalized identities, visibility is not always positive! For disability in particular, many of the derogatory stereotypes in media about disabled people are found among villains and within the horror genre. There's an even bigger visibility of these stereotypes and ableist representations on Halloween. Many people visit "insane asylum"-themed haunted houses or dress up as one of the many physically disabled villains like Freddy Kruger. During this Social Justice Coffee Hour we'd like to expand the conversation of cultural appropriation to look at how disability and disabled people often become a costume as well.

Facilitated by Beck Martens and Christa Mullis
